Solace of the Shadows
Sunday, October 09, 2005
As we sit ourselves down to have dinner, perhaps complaining about the food being too spicy or too bland for our liking, as we fuss over the lack of sizable portions, as we ponder about what to get for dessert, the same split second, thousands of people have instantly lost their lives, thousands more plunged into utter helplessness and suffering, and even thousands more grieve for their relatives afflicted.
Suddenly, all of our life's difficulties and frustration pale in stark comparison to what has happened. Complaining about having to wake up for school tomorrow, whining about having to take the bus down, fussing over what to wear. I have been guilty of such actions from time to time. Yes, what can we do about it? Perhaps this incident will merely prey on our minds for the next few days, before we once again settle back comfortably to switch channels everytime we see the news headlining the disaster relief, searching for something else of greater entertainment to us.
When do we ever become truly grateful for everything that is present around us? When do we count our blessings that we have not been subjected to such heartwrenching suffering and pain? When do we think of those who are struggling as we speak, to help others trying to recover fragments of their lives so effortlessly destroyed in the blink of an eye?
19,000 have died so far in Pakistan. A country i only visited once when i was a child. Yet, it doesn't matter in the least. No one deserves to be placed in such a horrific situation.
Will you look upon this post and smirk in amusement at the apparent meaninglessness of my words? May this fasting month carry more than just abstinence from the decadence of life's luxuries for us, may this help us truly become better people. I say this not because i want to seem above anyone else in showing concern for this issue, but i write this because i truly want it to happen. I have not been the best of individuals and i hope i don't forget this anytime soon.
